Instead, owning yourself at cost + effort is the true functional reality of success. In other words, "Own Root" as developers of your own life and work, and give that structural authority to your children, and all children, as foundation of American Dream, and practices of literacy designed "of, by, for" American citizens all.
If you want to protect a superior position, use the advantageous leverage you possess to disable counter-positions. The systemic use of this practice will produce an effect akin to blind loyalty, wherein the absence of actual opportunity is replaced with a form of granted opportunity.
Freedom is never free, it always comes with a cost. The acquisition of free resources can often produce dumb results, transforming the process of expressing freedom into an act of propagating "freedumb".
When education no longer prioritizes education, but enforces a model of employment certification, the personal leverage of the learner is of tertiary importance to the control possessed by the employer and employed. When the model of education itself practiced by the institutionally employed no longer represents the value path of greatest importance in the life of a young learner, the conflict results in a dysfunctional conversation where priorities no longer align, and mandated participation, certifications, and constraints of change hold the status quo in place, controlling the means by which change is deemed possible.
When data systems, in any form, protect their systemic leverage by erasing competitive market forces simply by reducing value production opportunities by extending free use opportunities with hidden costs where rents are extracted in ways that people of average intelligence are not able to easily understand or parse for themselves, the results that become observable echo history... people make slaves of themselves for the immediate benefit or gain of power that is yielded from free use.
In this sense, whether the guns are free or the tools of social connectivity are free, the results are the same... people are owned as assets, and self-possession is reduced as a commodity of exchange in order for those with leverage to utilize this advantage for private gain.
We are living through an era where despite ample examples provided by history, and ample complaining produced by many disadvantaged groups, people are willingly making slaves of themselves to systems, companies, social efforts and the like in order to simply gain "free access".
The problem is simple:
When an advanced opportunity to learn advanced skills is provided for FREE, neither the provider of the opportunity increases his/her personal leverage directly by the act of service, nor does the community participating create elevated opportunity that can be capitalized on by new learners individually.
Instead... FREE keeps the provider and the receiver at a baseline of exchange equal to one another wherein zero increased leverage is afforded directly between participants. Instead, an outside agency is required to elevate the transaction, thus yielding opportunity for those with systemic positions of superior leverage to play the role "benevolent giver", in lieu of the more empowering and accurate result of individuals acting on their own behalf to create new and more empowering forms of personal opportunity.
By comparison, when this same provider creates this same opportunity at a cost better reflecting personal value and asks participants to evaluate this exchange, this value exchange creates an immediate opportunity to emerge in real world terms without the need of a "benevolent giver" interceding on the exchange. When the provider earns $1 from a unit of service, and provides this service to 100 people, the resulting $100 in value possessed by the provider is now an asset enabling the provider to function directly as "benevolent giver" to other individuals in need of assistance in accessing opportunity. The result is a two-party system where value is created and distributed directly between involved parties, without the inclusion of a third party that is not necessary for the existence of the opportunity in the first place.
Additionally, the $100 enables the creation of secondary markets, where new providers may emerge to assist the initial provider in serving more people, thus creating additional opportunity for more people to duplicate the results already achieved. When 10 such people become providers of opportunity producing $100 in value exchanges, the resulting local market has a size of $1000, a local gain equal to 1000% increase in self-empowerment not requiring charity from an outside entity practicing a form of benevolent giving that keeps self-empowerment at zero perpetually.
This is not theory; this is practicable and testable for yourself.
It is easy to do anything for FREE, as the cost of failure and the pressure to achieve valued outcomes and results remains zero. Conversely, the pressure to produce valued results rises proportionately with the cost of accessing the opportunity bearing a cost. Free services may persist longer without producing actual value, but cost-based services will perish if the value gained by participation does not equal or exceed the cost.
In our modern world... education, internet services like Facebook and Code.org and the like propose to create value by projecting free services, but extract rents at deeper layers of interaction than most people are able to understand. Additionally, their existence is funded by third party investors and "benevolent givers" who extract leverage from the gamed use of these free services positioned to dominate markets by reducing the opportunity for authentic competition.
Public education exists in a similar position with the receivers of its services. While projected as an education system generally, it is too often projected and gamed as an employment system, rather than a system that rewards the producers and receivers of authentic education in a sustainable and value enhancing way. While there are more good educators practicing education than not within this system, their efforts are constrained by an administrative model generally that restricts adequate growth and responses to real world needs except by the rare individual leader who takes command of local budgets through enlightened leadership in partnership with School Boards.
Reform?
How?
When?
People do not appear to presently possess enough understanding of this dynamic to serve their own best interests, and until such time as they do, the status quo will remain as the entrenched reality.
Complaining will do nothing to change anything.
The pathway to own root personal authority is freely available, but must be pursued as a cost + effort transaction standing up the structure of Freedom so that one can experience the results, self-possessed.
