Today, Facebook bought Oculus Rift for $2B.. OR is a VR play.
Today, @notch stated that he was cancelling plans to develop Minecraft for OR,
and cited the "Creepiness" of Facebook as his sole reason.
Person first technologies and their developers draw hard lines in the sandbox.
VR is apparently a persson first technology.
Facebook is not.
A company that builds social network tools using a data model akin to data-serfdom can not be a person first technology. That ship has sailed.
But the future can be a person first technology.
Minecraft is pointing to a path ahead, and Markus Persson is leading the way, despite the fact that he is a very reluctant leader by all appearances, with a tendency to speak his mind with immediate clarity... a rare trait among actual leaders.
A company that makes money, and provides the opportunity for others to make money by making the same product... derivative products... a cultural product experience... is a very potent example. It is a full circle model...
Person first technologies are not negotiable. You can not lobby for a certification mark. The people know immediately and they don't need irrelevant cues.
Person first technologies by their very nature empower people under personal Terms. Personal Terms are sovereign concerns. This is the simple reason Facebook can not be a person first technology. Facebook is destroying personal sovereignty... just by existing.
That people use Facebook is irrelevant... Humans make slaves of themselves everyday... this does not change the fact that it is immoral and illegal to enslave Human beings. Facebook was born of an immature mind and bears an immature social structure. It is historically disappointing to witness it's growth, and will provide an interesting context for future generations to evaluate.
The internet is being recreated in many layers... and web literacy is not only a consumption event, it is a production event, and a sharing event, and a structural event that each of us get to be a part of. And at the end of this amazingly exciting creative event that we are all in the midst of... person first technologies are the only guarantee that what we are doing ends up for the benefit of each of us... Individually.
Harvesting value from this planet without accountability for the end game is still legal... freedom is still legal folks... but enlightened choices are precious self generative gems... capable of exponential reproduction and value scaling.
I applaud, agree with, and will promote these first-person technology leaders and leadership moments.
