Failing Forward

Since 1992, the first year I really touched "the internet" for the first time, I have been speculating, playing, developing, instigating and sharing my ideas and interests in this technology and system. What a ride. At this domain, I publish about 40% of the posts I write. When I look back on those posts that I do publish, there is clearly a trend of subjects I have directed my attention at here, and put out into circulation. But this represents a very small topical focus of my overall efforts to write about the net, or the code I write and use personally.

What is most interesting to me about this domain is the rather extreme and sometimes incendiary perspective I give voice to. As the domain name suggests... I suppose that has always been the point... to try and crystallize a purist perspective on issues that I have believed for a long time Society would have to confront to manifest the most productive and healthy path forward in being affected by the inventions the internet enables.

Admittedly, I sometimes fail to get it right. I take perspectives that come from a too tightly defined context of participation to be useful to others. I write for myself, rather than my readers, and I fail to utilize empathy in effectively putting across ideas that are impact-full in my experience. In this regard, I find resonance with Ralph Waldo Emerson and believe that if I should say today something that contradicts what I said yesterday, so be it... I am an iterative process... I fail forward in just about every aspect of my life, at an extreme pace, and I have been very well-served by this approach. But, that said, I do recognize the difficulty that presents in creating static media that networks itself.

I have not been writing on this domain much for  the past 6+ months... and I am not sure I intend to change that... my own interests are evolving quickly and some of these topics I have written about are of less interest to me today than they have been in the past. Society is catching up, running into, confronting the problems, and iterating its own way forward while confronting many of the issues I have written about. But there is also a counter-productive trend happening in the public square... where open access and freedom often come to mix it up and empower others... and personal contextual control and localization within an increasingly networked Universe is becoming even more strategically interesting.

For my part...this is good. While my positions here on this blog are admittedly extreme in many ways, they represent a very small percentage of my overall working efforts. If I publish 40% of what I write here, I would estimate this represents less than 5% of what I write overall. Most of my communication in any format is contextual to personal relationships, rather than global networks.

This speaks to the structure of my own participation as one of the edges of the network ecosystem the internet has become and will become increasingly. I believe in leadership and public benefit, I am enthusiastic about entrepreneurial creativity and life-long learning, and I am committed to personal empowerment and control of the raw materials that Society uses and leverages to improve the condition of the masses and the environment within which all of our families and lives seek happiness and health within.

I resonate with those that travel paths less taken... I am inspired by methods of self-reliance and stories of people who choose to bring those methods into contact with others to create social empowerment. In my life, I have learned to stand my ground in a fight for what is best, but to have the wisdom to yield when the fight is not productive or depletes value from my relationships. Again, sometimes I mis-time my actions and project my voice in ways that are counter-productive for my intent, but in the end, I am a learning being, so there is no end to processes, even if relationships are affected beyond change. Such is life.

This post I intend to publish as a mechanism for explaining where this blog is at as of its writing, to document below the top 10 posts by reads all time, and to let it stand on its own merits as I progress into other areas of interest. Human identity remains a core interest for me... and will for the duration of my existence likely. I have been party to the unfortunate effects that mis-management at the systemic level can have on a person's life through this "thing" we use to define so many participatory aspects of Human life on this planet. I hope for its improvement... I believe in the internet's inherent confrontation with this outcome, and I hope for iterative improvement in due time.

Here is to hope and work...
